Daceyville Just up the road from me at Daceyville Apparently is Australia's first public housing Proper public housing-built to end slums I walk up to the newly reopened tram line Past the remarkable pleasant ornate cottages And reflect that our leaders would never Never ever ever attempt to reduce poverty The way those people tried to do back then Apparently the ANZACS were a part of it: They got back from hell and demanded a fix To poverty and slums and hunger and, well, shit 'What did we go and fight and die for?' they asked I suppose they thought an unequal society unfair Our laughable leaders now scarcely pause to think They're too busy scheming moneymakes for the rich Do we need more terrifying wars to right things? Are people in parliaments so corrupt? So stupid? Why on Earth do we still vote for these cowards? At least Daceyville still exists-for the time being Reminding us there's possible hope for the future The far, far distant future, I'm saddened to report
