The Platform Is Meritocracy For Those Without Merit It's really starting to get stupid Stupid and incredibly boring The staff member has a superior air And the hint of an irrepressible smile And still the train won't come They said something about trackwork Or about driver shortages Or was there an earlier incident- Further down the line- Elsewhere, somewhere The station is quite impressive really Old, from the late nineteenth century We find anything from that era charming That idea that progress could fix everything Liberate people with exciting opportunities There used to be a branch line here too You can see where it goes off Overgrown with trees now Imagine a train going down there The waiting room seems ridiculously oversized For these days at least I love the ornate features in there I used to come here as a child As a bored teenager with friends We'd wait for the midnight Sydney-bound The excitement of an escape out of here Thinking of the big city's delights I suppose we were pretty naive Those dreams are long gone And still this fucking train won't come
